In this post, we’ll look at the details of taking a holistic approach to modernization, and how NTT DATA’s Surveyor framework was created to tackle this conundrum. The framework aligns operational goals, user needs and technology capabilities to effect strategic forethought. This approach eliminates inefficiencies in systems and drives continuous process improvements, freeing up funding for modernization.

In early 2015, I wrote a perspective on the Evolution of Data Science. Two years later, data science has evolved significantly, becoming an integral part of data management. Today, organizations can realistically expect to use data management and analytics to monetize their data.

A few advanced enterprises have taken a deep dive into data by creating data lakes, but most organizations have only touched the surface in terms of their data’s potential.

By nature, large applications take several man-years to migrate to new technologies—in other words, multi-year, multi-million dollar efforts involving serious risk. Worse, by the time the project is implemented, there are often further challenges:

I recently reconnected to a former colleague and friend of mine through a social networking site after almost 16 years. After brief messages online, we exchanged phone numbers and planned an informal chat. When we spoke to each other after more than a decade, his first question was, “I hope you are not still working on mainframes!” At first the question irritated me, but I quickly explained to him what I do these days and how the knowledge of various generations of technologies has become critical in the legacy modernization space.

Many of us saw the Terminator movie series. It’s entertaining, true, but the whole concept behind this action-packed thriller is even more interesting. Skynet, the advanced artificial intelligence antagonist in the film, develops the ability to time travel.  Both Skynet and the humans use the capability in their efforts to win their ongoing war — either by altering or accelerating past events in their favor or by preventing or forestalling their apocalyptic present timeline.

“Bots” are making a lot of noise on social media and other fronts. These automated conversational applications/programs act like humans, but can they replace humans? The short answer is “no,” but they can add a great deal of value to your company and your customers.

Bots (short for “robots”) are programs designed to perform automated tasks. Bots can be thought of as a form of artificial intelligence software, which I discussed in my recent post on cognitive computing.

Hampered by aging IT environments consuming an increasing percentage of annual operating budgets, many government organizations find themselves becoming more technologically obsolete by the day. Often, these organizations recognize the urgent need to modernize IT systems but lack a funding source or the required expertise to implement such a plan. Other factors compounding this dilemma include:

    • The increasing rate of retirement among government employees
    • The availability of professionals experienced in antiquated technologies
    • Reliance on unsupported third-party hardware/software

I recently had an interesting conversation with a chief architect about the hype around cognitive computing and its relevance to data monetization efforts for analytics. The chief architect said he believes data cannot be monetized without cognitive computing—an interesting theory, given that monetization of data is impacting all kinds of businesses today.

But I began to think about how cognitive computing might change the data analytics space, which is already overwhelmed with big data.

Next to our Bangalore office, there used to be a small tea shop selling tea, cookies, bread, newspapers, and so on. Some of my colleagues and many students from a neighboring college were regular customers. One day when passing by, I saw the owner had begun renovating the shop. There was hardly any space to stand inside, and it was extremely noisy and dusty. A few days later, I noticed that the shop had closed; it was simply too difficult to manage the renovation and keep the business running. Of course, the shop forfeited considerable revenue each day it was closed.
